Access-a-Ramp ~ James Dyson Award

The Access-a-Ramp is a device designed to improve train accessibility for reduced mobility users, including those in wheelchairs, the elderly, and people with prams or heavy luggage. The ramp, fitted in a number of doorways on each train, deploys automatically when requested allowing easy and unassisted access to the rail service for those previously at a disadvantage. The device comprises 8 hinged slats which can be deployed on either side of the carriage, by a rack and pinion electric drive system. Cables in the side walls control the angle of the slats as they emerge, with front edge sensors detecting when the platform has been reached. This ensures a capability to deal with variation in the vertical platform to train gap encountered in the UK rail infrastructure. (Music courtesy of incompetech.com
